Petitions on WE the PEOPLE White House website about Guns and Insurance

There are currently 2 petitions which are being offered and which call for requiring gun insurance. They are not detailed solutions and have not gained much support.  They are:

Sponsor legislation requiring that all gun owners be required to purchase liability insurance from private carriers

This petition asserts a potential for mayhem by military-grade firearms. It proposes that weapons holding more than 6 shells or which can be fired faster than once a second have $1 million dollars. It was created Dec 19, 2012 and as of Dec 31 has 364 signatures

Penalize all gun owners who do not purchase insurance against damage caused by their guns

This petition recites basic concerns about gun violence and demands a PENALTY for those who do not have sufficient insurance. It was created Dec 22, 2012 and as of Dec 31 has 20 signatures.

These numbers could be compared to the numbers of signatures on pro-gun petitions or petitions attacking gun critics. The power of organization in something like this is amazing. The Anti Gun Critic petitions appear to be expressions of extreme hostility rather than attempts to solve problems. There are also several petitions calling for more regulation of guns.

  1. Here is a petition you missed.

It is straightforward, requiring liability insurance for firearms based on their potential for damage to both people and property. We require insurance on automobiles, boats, trailers, RVs, 4-wheel all terrain vehicles, attractive nuisances like swimming pools, and any number of other items on the basis that they pose a potential hazard, either used correctly or incorrectly.

Given the economic costs associated with gun incidents which Bloomberg notes was provided to the CDC of $174 billion annually, from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Maryland, which appears to be completely non-partisan, and given the figures from academic analysis that shows that having firearms makes one more likely to be injured by them, than they are likely to be used in defensive shooting, like this one: and this one: , it is likely the firearms owner of his immediate family, friends, guests or other invitees who would benefit from this insurance coverage, as well as the firearms owners.

Thanks for your comment on our blog earlier ( where we have several posts on this topic – I hope you will add the link to this petition on your blog here. There appears to be a clear need for the costs of firearms to be redirected back to the firearms owners instead of them being foisted on the rest of the public in the U.S. Ideally, insurance could help bring that desideratum about while making it less costly for the gun owners who might otherwise be required to post a bond for their firearms or to attempt to self-insure.

If mandatory liability insurance were combined with requiring a firearms owner to do a background check on any transfer of ownership, or loan, of their firearms, and the requirement of proof of insurance to purchase ammunition, it might be possible to reduce the amount of gun violence involving illegal guns. At some point all guns start out as legal. If we require people to show some additional responsibility in ownership – like an insurance company requiring secure gun storage and/or the reporting of any firearms stolen or missing – it might help us to reduce the guns falling into the hands of those who are prohibited from firearm ownership.

    • Thanks for pointing this out. I’ll put in the link shortly. Try to get some links to this blog as well as it’s new and I want to get it out there. I’ve got a lot to add as this is a very interesting subject.
